April, 2007 - BRAVE NEW WORLD
An interview by James Tully - Roach City Chronicle -
While having a beer with a friend one evening, our conversation, as it always does, turned to movies.  Seemingly out of nowhere, my friend began to talk about a place called Roach City.  At first I thought he was telling a joke, but I soon realized that my friend (Jay Mackenzie Roach) was building an entire world in his mind.  I was working hard to keep up with his train of thought, when finally I stopped him.  I carefully formed questions in my mind while I grabbed my pen, tape recorder, laptop…

Tully – Okay, no more unintelligible ramblings.  This is being preserved on tape, so do your best to make a little sense.

Roach – Strangely, I don’t remember agreeing to an interview.

Tully – Yeah, yeah.  First question…  What is Roach City?

Roach – Wow, good question.  You should try doing this for a living or something.  Uhh, let’s see, I would describe Roach City as being a darkly heightened reflection of the world we live in.  It’s more nightmare than fantasy, you might say.  But basically, it’s a setting for stories to be told.  It’s a city.

Tully – Why exactly are you creating your own city?

Roach – Several reasons I think.  I’ve written several scripts in the past, and without even trying to, the setting is always kind of undefined.  It’s never Los Angeles, New York, Oklahoma City.  It’s a city, but it’s never really named.  People would read my scripts, and say “Where does this take place?”.  I never really had an answer for them, because there wasn’t a good answer.  I didn’t want it to take place in any of those places, I wanted it to take place in this city that I’m imagining.  So at some point I called it Roach City.  I wrote my first script incorporating that, and that script kind of started the process of defining Roach City as an actual place.

Tully – And that script is…

Roach – Gratuitous.  It’s the movie that I’m developing currently.  Recently I’ve been working on it with a friend named Andy Redmon, who is one hell of a Set Designer, by the way.  Very Talented.  But we’ve been trying to flesh out Gratuitous a little, but mostly we’ve been fleshing out Roach City.  Just trying to get to know our setting and what different areas of the city are like.  We even drew a map for God's sake.  We're really getting into it. It’s an ongoing process though, I mean, we’re kind of actually building a city.  In truth, it doesn’t necessarily effect the script we currently have, because it's already written and it's already incorporated what it needs, but still it’s interesting to know the political climate of the city.  What is the racial diversity.  Financial diversity.  The hierarchy of the criminal underworld.  Things like that, you know?  We’ve decided there’s a section of town that caters to vices like gaming, strip clubs, bars, etc.  There’s also a separate town just outside Roach City called Dolltown that has legalized prostitution.  Dogsbody is the industrial district. And then there's...

Tully – Dogsbody?  Where’d you come up with that?

Roach – That’s actually Andy’s word.  It’s an old slang term used in the navy directed towards laborers.  It’s an industrial district, on the river, shipping yards, manufacturing plant.  Heavy labor.  So it’s Dogsbody.

Tully – What’s the name of the River?

Roach – Don’t know.  We're still in the early stages of developing this society.  It’s gonna be a long process, but eventually the river will have a name, we’ll have street names, specific businesses, characters, political figures, influential people will be defined and such.  And so on, and so on.

Tully – You’re gonna have characters that intersect through different movies?

Roach – Absolutely, the mayor in one movie might still be the mayor in the next.  He may be on screen in one film, and only get mentioned in another, but it’s all the same world.  A guy who owns a bar may be a central figure in one movie, and his bar may show up again as a location in the next.  He may have a cameo or supporting role, if it proves right for the story.  A private detective might have his own movie, and in another movie he shows up for just a couple scenes.  The point is, once a character is created, he or she is a part of that world.  Obviously people age, get voted out of office, get killed, whatever.  Roach City will evolve with time just like any other world.  Or most worlds at least.  In the case of James Bond, the world evolves but Bond is always young, we’re not approaching it that way.  The characters of our world will change with time.

Tully – Are the movies going to be related?

Roach – There may be some cases where a movie directly relates to another.  I can’t say there won’t be any sequels or anything like that, we’ll just have to see.  But in general, there’s no rule that any certain movie relates to another, other than they both take place in the same city.  A city of millions, no reason to think that they’ll all relate directly to one another. But some of them will I'm sure.

Tully – You mentioned Gratuitous.

Roach – Yeah.

Tully – Gratuitous involves vampires.

Roach – Yes.

Tully – Is that a defining aspect

Roach – Not at all.  Vampires do not define Roach City.  Roach City has vampires, but they are just a small portion of the population.  And a portion that likes to stay hidden at that.  Their existence isn’t common knowledge to the everyday citizens.  We plan on making many movies that take place in this city.  For many years to come.  It’s a city with all kinds of people and situations that would allow us to tackle any genre we want to.  Vampires, serial killers, buddy cops, crime drama, con game, detective story, spy thriller, you name it.  It can all happen here.

Tully – So where do you go from here?

Roach – Well, I think we’re gonna spend a little more time developing Roach City, and then I’m guessing we’ll need to make a movie or something.

Tully – Gratuitous?

Roach – Maybe?  It may be a little pricey for us to tackle right now, so possibly something else.

Tully – So what is it?

Roach – A little writing is gonna have to take place before I can answer that.  Check back with me later.
